photobooth

Since we got our new point of sale system, the girls have been picking it up pretty quickly. They are always at the computer, trying to figure things out, or SO I THOUGHT! Turns out they are all just really into Photobooth (and really, who isn't?!?). Here are some pictures of them that I found in the deleted pictures folder.

This is Jenn, taking a gulp of the waterfall.

Uh, making french faces? I have no idea . . .

But, in all fairness, I've been a photoboothing too:

surprise or scare?

sadly we didn't have a camera to capture the crazy events of our evening, but amanda and i were forced to evacuate from the new store this evening. with scare of a gas leak next door, the fire department had young attractive firemen come and "assist" us in leaving the building.

it was crazy! almost all of whyte ave was lined up with fire trucks. i guess everything went well though. we came back from our sit in starbucks and the red tape surrounding the block had been removed and all the men were gone.

this is us looking scared.

Third Time's A Charm

We opened the doors to our new location this week! We've been settling in and getting comfortable. It's been nice to see all of our friends, family, and long time customers who stop in to chit chat and check it all out. Thank you for your support! Here are a few pictures from our very first day:

The big windows let in lots of beautiful light.

Those are all of the grannies on the far right. Lots of wall space for them!

The changerooms are fairly grand, I have to say. Lots of room, a big mirror, and a chandelier in each one.

We have a computer! It's called POSIM. (Point of Sale Inventory Management, but we prefer to think of the cute animal).

Tala knows best. Seriously. She knows best. So just ask her. Maybe we should start an advice column/blog, and people could send in their questions and she could answer them for you. Preferably questions about POSIM, performing in bands, starting record labels, dance choreography, or business marketing.

So the beautiful new floors turned out to be a lot more slippery than I thought. I was just walking along, kinda dancing kinda not, and wham, I hit the ground. Apparently the fall could be classified as 'graceful'. Thankfully Tala got in on camera. Miranda was too busy laughing her ass off.

Don't forget the studio!

The studio's been an entertaining mess while we've been readying and moving the new store. We're trying to work on our Fall 08 line but keep finding ourselves called away to hang a chandelier or screw in a shelf at the new store. Not that we really mind. Laurel's been documenting the resulting disentegration of order and propriety at the studio as the store comes closer and closer to completion. Take a look.

tick tock tick tock

We'll be in our new store next week, ack! But I am relieved to say that we are on schedule and the space is shaping up quite well. We were all working late this evening, so here are some random shots.

This is one half of our new couch. I'm sure many of you keen ladies will recognize the pillow fabric from the Bugs n' Petal dress from spring 07. And the squirrel pillows are adorable and will be for sale very soon!

Not very exciting, unless you're me. New office furniture! Which took 7 hours to build! Fuck you Ikea!

We heart Grandma's. The little old ladies are getting a new look for the store, a coat of stain/varnish to freshen up their frames. Here they all are laying out to dry.

Elizabeth is hanging up some beautiful pieces of fabrics while Miranda, Tara, and I are sitting on the floor occasionally giving her directions, but are really just sharing our 'one time, i got so drunk . . .' stories.

Okay, that's all for now but hopefully we'll get some more pictures up here soon for those who can't stop by the store once we're open. Just 7 more sleeps!

WE'RE MOVING!

It's just down the street, 5 blocks, to 10318-82 ave. It's right next door to Two Rooms Cafe, and we'll be settled in at the end of the month. It's a beautiful space, an old bank building, built in 1908. It has high ceilings, large windows, radiators, and even a vault!

We'll post more pictures soon and keep you posted on our progress. Until then, I suggest listening to Bowie.

L.A.

Elizabeth and I were in LA this week at a textile trade show. We were looking for fabrics for fall 08 (kinda crazy, huh?) and found some amazing stuff! We also went to a jobber, someone who has fabric on hand, rather than ordering it from a mill. It was this big 2 story warehouse packed full of bolts of fabrics.

We had a good time wondering around in the fashion district, mainly cause it was right next to the flower district. It smelled so lovely, and there were some crazy floral arrangements too, check this one out:

As well, here is a travel tip for all of you. Read the fine print when booking rooms. We stayed at the Standard hotel downtown LA, which, if I would have read carefully, has glass showers. Here is a picture of Elizabeth, in the bathroom, which you can see isn't very private. Whoopies.

Anyway, we're hope happy to be home. Elizabeth is designing the fall 08 line and I am, well, doing paperwork, but that can be fun too . . .

mashed potatoes and turkey stuffing

with all the running around over the past two weeks, organizing the nokomis party and fashion show, it's time for a break. thanksgiving weekend usually leads to eating too much and drinking just enough to have an entertaining family gathering. so, the holiday came in time for us both at the store and the studio.

leaves are falling, and the wind is blowing. fall is coming to an end; with winter creeping its way back into the city. sweaters are making their way out of the back of the closet and into our daily attire. this year we picked up a line of beautiful loom knit sweaters from montréal; majolie. perfect for the cold that takes over edmonton.
mel is wearing the men's sweater, boris (top) and one of the women's knits, blanche (bottom).
you can read more about the company on the website: www.majolie.ca

Fall Fashion Show

We're having a fashion show on Friday September 28th at Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton. It's gonna be a fun night, as there are 5 shows that evening (including Stanley Carroll). The event starts at 8pm, but come before that to get good seats. You can pick up tickets at the store for $15. You can also click here for more info on Edmonton Fashion Week.

And afterwards we're hosting a DANCE PARTY! Us nokomis girls are a little notorious for being the first on and last off the dance floor, so come celebrate with us at the Temple (the back of the Starlite Room). DJ Generic and DJ Frederick will be providing us with sweet beats. It's free! (You just need to remember to bring your Starlite Room membership, or else pick one up at the door). Practice your moves . . . or just come to laugh at ours!

just in time!

The winter stock has been coming in like crazy for the past month or so, and we've anxiously waited for new Nokomis pieces. Luckily two of our favourite dresses arrived for our big birthday party tomorrow, the Fanflowers dress (top) and the Mustard dress (bottom). Tomorrow evening both are 20% off, along with the rest of the Nokomis fall line, in celebration of turning 5! Come check it out. Or just eat cupcakes . . .
