FASHION SHOW!!!!

our fashion show is coming up!!!!!! yeeeeeee!

we really truly hope you can make it out this thursday, april 9th to support us as we send our girls down the catwalk. i just talked with our manufacturer this morning who tells me that, yes, the clothes should be here on time (it was looking dire for awhile) so our show's totally going to happen! for real!

shanti hair therapy is once again coming to our rescue and making sure we look beautiful for the evening (they're so talented and so good to us, it feels like a million bucks to find a salon that's consistently amazing in every way). gravity pope is also doing what they do best and providing shoes for our models. i've already fallen in love with about 10 pairs while perusing the stunning goods they get to select from. so jealous. we're also lucky to have genevieve on staff at noko who, besides designing our nokomis accessories, creates the myrtle and pearls line of jewellery. she'll be outfitting the ears of all our models in her beautiful feather earrings.

the event goes down at the transalta arts barns, 10330-84th avenue, with doors open at 7pm and shows starting 8pm.

you can buy tickets at the door for $20, which i know seems like a lot of money for a night out but you'll get to see five fashion shows, live entertainment and, i've just found out, there's a bar at the venue! to make the deal even sweeter we're going to give $20 off any purchase of $100 or more to anyone who brings their fashion show ticket stub into the store on friday, saturday or monday (we're closed for easter on sunday). this goes for any fashion show ticket stub too, not just ours.

please come down and support us, we can't wait to show you what we've made.

party over here, party over there...

see what happens when jessica and i work together on mondays and no one comes to entertain us? we're forced to entertain ourselves by playing with the self-timer on the camera and pretending we actually have a dance party to dress up for and go out to.

we're nerds. just us nerds partying at noko.

i'm wearing norwegian wood fringe skirt, 100 and preloved aria trench top, 149. jessica has on norwegian wood leggings, 50 and hastings and main zipper tank, 198.

peaseblossom

our spring collection is all about daydreaming, dress-up, and fantasies of far-away places, though firmly rooted in prairie practicality. the dresses are named for the colours and shapes they evoke but also for characters of imaginary whimsy.

if you've ever read a midsummer night's dream you may remember peaseblossom as one of four fairies (along with moth, cobweb and mustardseed) ordered by titania to attend to her donkey-ish lover, bottom. i know, i know, enough with the fairies right? well, see, that's what i was dreaming about while dressed up at my grandmother's house when i was a kid. evidently that's still what i was dreaming about last year while designing our spring collection as i knew i wanted to create a peaseblossom dress (and a moth and a cobweb).

i keep forgetting to blog about it but our peaseblossom dress arrived in store recently and i'm so happy with it. it reminds me of a plump petal blossoming out, upturned, from the waist. the halter bodice is like a sleek grounding stem and the wooden buttons bring the whole thing back to the world of reality. the dress is available in a pale pink (a good way to incorporate the pale nude tones that are hot for summer) or a striking black, which is my favorite. we've also just added the dress for sale online. the paintings are by henry fuseli and more can be found here if you want to scare the crap out of yourself.

it's complex

so as jessica mentioned a few posts back, we received our spring shipment of montreal-based clothing line complex geometries last week and boy are we in lust! it's been a few seasons since we carried clayton evan's totally unique and versatile designs and, i gotta say, we're just pleased as punch to be able to showcase his work once again.

complex geometries consists primarily of cotton and silk modular pieces designed to drape and fall in different ways depending on how the wearer wraps, belts, ties, or turns the piece around. tee shirts and dresses can be worn a multitude of ways, limited only by the wearer's imagination.

we like complex geometries because we feel special and unique when we wear it. we like that the clothes are so forward thinking and clever. we like clayton too, he's one of the nicest guys around and is enjoying a great deal of much-deserved press in the larger fashion world right now. he's a real sweetie pie and makes amazing stuff.

jessica also mentioned that these pieces are going fast and she's right... we've already had to re-order some styles since their arrival last week. so if you're looking to buy a special garment from an up-and-coming designer of note it's simple--complex is the way to go.

spring flowers

the lovey ladies from Eden Lily brought by the most beautiful poppies for the store today. just in time to keep the spring mood in the air, while snow loomed over the city. along with the Amelie soundtrack playing on repeat in the background, the flowers added to my longing for long bike rides in dresses and eating strawberries in the grass.

i might just have to go and pick some up for myself!

noko news

if you're on our email list you may have noticed a message from us in your inbox yesterday afternoon with the subject 'nokomis newsletter'. if you're wondering what the heck it is, well, it's something we're trying out as a way to highlight what we think are fun events coming up in edmonton over the next month. we hope to use it to let you know what items you can expect in store too as well as events we're excited to host/be a part of/just really want to go to.

we think edmonton is a special city (yes, we're a little biased) with a lot of neat things to offer, some obvious, some delightfully hidden gems. with our newsletter we hope to share some of our favorite parts of the city with you, as well as a little more of ourselves.

if you're not currently on our email list but would like to be, shoot jessica an email at mail@nokomisclothing.ca.
