nokomis spring 2009 photoshoot

on a bright, sunny day in the middle of august, elizabeth, laurel, tara and i piled into my isuzu rodeo and drove two hours out of town to a farm in the middle of the alberta prairies. we spent the day styling/modeling/shooting the spring 2009 collection.

it might seem a little early to be thinking about spring, but elizabeth has been working on this collection since last april, when she was in los angeles looking at fabrics. we need to have the collection, and catalogue, completely ready by the end of august to be able to show boutiques across canada. their buyers put in orders for what they want on their racks come spring, and we have a few months to order in the fabrics and organize production.

which basically boils down to us getting to spend a beautiful summer day outside! we had a blast even though we all ended up looking like lobsters.

the nokomis spring collection reflects nostalgia for days of dress-up, grasshoppers, and hours spent entertaining oneself in the exquisite colours of a prairie summer. here are a few teasers for you.

tara was our gorgeous model (and location scout!)

the farm acutally belongs to the family of shane, tara's boyfriend. he rolled up in a pick up truck after working on the fields all day, and his shirt made us all jealous.

charlie, tara's blue heeler, was also around to keep us company.

laurel, our graphic design/photographer extraordinaire, has a gifted eye. all the pictures were so beautiful we had a hard time narrowing them down.

technically, elizabeth and i were styling the shoot, but the sun (and mono) started to get to me . . .

so elizabeth fed us a delicious lunch of hot dogs. but once a black furry caterpillar landed on the picnic cloth, we decided it was time to get back to work.

it was one of those perfect summer days that makes you realize you need to get out of the city more often. ideally with a car full of friends . . .
